Work halted across HS2 London tunnels after safety scare
All construction work across the London tunnels section of HS2 has been suspended following a site accident.
The Skanska Costain STRABAG joint venture in charge of the work is undergoing a full safety review following the incident on September 29.
The Telegraph said two workers narrowly escaped being crushed by a steel beam swinging across a tunnel ventilation shaft when a gantry crane was being dismantled at the Green Park Way ventilation shaft in west London.
Four tunnel boring machines are currently being dismantled there and removed from the tunnels.
HS2 Chief Executive Officer Wild told The Telegraph: “Safety is our number one priority at HS2. Due to a serious incident, works have been safely halted across the London tunnels section of the route.
“While no workers were physically harmed, our contractor, Skanska Costain STRABAG joint venture, is undertaking a comprehensive review of safety procedures and leadership on their sites before a safe restart can take place.”
