Trio bag £2.9bn Sellafield infrastructure delivery deal

Morgan Sindall Infrastructure, Costain and Hochtief have secured contracts worth up to £2.9bn to deliver vital non-nuclear infrastructure across the Sellafield site in West Cumbria.

The trio secured spots on Sellafield’s new Infrastructure Delivery Partnership (IDP), a long-term arrangement designed to modernise and maintain the site’s essential services, including power, water, transport and security systems.

The new Infrastructure Delivery Partnership set-up replaces the Infrastructure Services Alliance with Morgan Sindall and Arup

The nine-year deal, with the option of a further six years taking it to 2040, replaces the previous Infrastructure Strategic Alliance and forms a core part of Sellafield’s long-term acquisition strategy.

Morgan Sindall will act as electrical distribution partner, Costain takes the utilities lot worth up to £1bn, and Hochtief will lead civils delivery worth £595m.

The firms will handle everything from detailed design and procurement to construction, commissioning and handover, supporting Sellafield’s nuclear decommissioning and waste management work.

Their projects and tasks will support essential services at Sellafield like electricity distribution, water, road and rail networks, bridges, foundations and security installations.

The partnership will also target social value gains through apprenticeships, upskilling, SME access, and local employment as part of a joint sustainability plan.

James Riddick, Sellafield’s chief supply chain officer, said the deal would “provide robust and reliable infrastructure to support nuclear decommissioning while unlocking investment and opportunities for the local community.”
