The Difference Between Cesspits & Septic Tanks

The Difference Between Cesspits & Septic Tanks

There are two options for waste disposal for those who own properties not connected to the main sewage system: septic tanks and cesspits. The terms are often used interchangeably, but they are actually different, and choosing the wrong option could be costly. An expert in waste management can help you understand the difference between a cesspit and a septic tank.

Key Differences Between Cesspits & Septic Tanks

At Thistle Tanks, we provide waste disposal services for both septic tanks and cesspits. We have years of experience helping both domestic and commercial clients manage their waste in a professional way. We have registered waste carriers and offer a flexible and competitive service. Our knowledgeable team can advise you on the best option for your needs, but as a general rule, septic tanks have a drainage function and cesspits do not.

What Is A Cesspit?

Cesspits are underground waste collection points that collect waste over a set period of time. Waste is not drained away – it is contained inside the carrier until it is emptied. Cesspits can be emptied at Thistle Tanks on a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly basis, depending on your needs.

Emptying cesspits regularly is required to prevent leaks, which is considered a criminal offense. It is still necessary to regularly empty our cesspits, although they are leakproof.

Cesspits are commonly used on construction sites or campsites as temporary waste management solutions.

What Is A Septic Tank?

For properties not connected to the mains sewage network, septic tanks are the most common option. Waste is treated and emptied into an approved waterway by a built-in draining system.

Although septic tanks are generally less maintenance-intensive than cesspits and are more permanent, they still require maintenance. Grease and fat, along with sanitary products, can block your septic tank, which eventually leads to flooding. You can avoid this problem by not flushing these substances down the sink or toilet.

We regularly service septic tanks to ensure they are legally compliant and not at risk of causing floods, while still ensuring your system is in good working order and free of built-up sewage.

Please contact us if you’re still unsure which option is best for you. If you’re based in Nottingham/the Midlands, we can discuss our septic tank and cesspit emptying service.
