Strabag secures £200m SEGRO rail freight terminal job

Strabag UK has secured the contract to deliver the last major phase of infrastructure works for the planned SEGRO Logistics Park Radlett in Hertfordshire.

The contractor will team up with Enfield-based civil engineer Galldris and Huntingdon earthworks specialist Mick George Group to prepare the site of the former Radlett Aerodrome near St Albans for its transformation into a strategic rail freight interchange.

The package of works understood to be worth around £200m will include constructing the rail terminal, preparing plots for up to seven warehouses and building private estate roads.

New rail freight terminal will link to the nearby Midland Main Line

The team will also deliver offsite upgrades to the A414 and M25. A new link road bypassing Park Street and Frogmore is also planned.

SEGRO has pledged over 600 acres of enhanced green space, biodiversity net gain, and new community facilities.

Construction is expected to run for the next three years.

The separate big warehouses build is expected to get underway in 2027.

Strabag UK build subdivision technical director Ian Burford said the project will be pivotal in shifting freight from road to rail, cutting emissions and congestion.

SEGRO national markets senior director Charles Blake said the latest package marked a “major step” in bringing the long-awaited scheme to life.

The delivery team brings heavyweight experience from HS2’s London tunnels, Google’s King’s Cross HQ and United Utilities’ HARP project.
