Quad bike hits striking Sellafield construction workers

Two men have been charged with dangerous driving after a quad bike hit a picket line of construction workers outside the Sellafield nuclear site on Wednesday.

A 55-year-old construction worker was taken to the West Cumberland Hospital with serious injuries before being transferred to the Cumberland Infirmary following the incident.

He remains in hospital in a stable condition.

Another man aged 39, also attended hospital with minor injuries and has now been discharged.

Cumbria police arrested four people following the incident.

Two men have now been charged with dangerous driving with the other two bailed on conditions.

The police added: “Officers are aware of some tensions in the community and would ask everybody to act responsibly.”

Union officials from Unite said the picket would continue as planned this week in a long running dispute over pay.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “This incident will not deter our members in continuing with their lawful industrial action and the strikes will go ahead as planned.”
