Plans in for 3,000-capacity TraffordCity ice arena
Plans have been lodged for a 3,000-capacity arena at TraffordCity in Manchester, aiming to bring a new ice rink and events venue to the city.
Developer ICITIES plans to build the TraffordCity Arena on the site of the former Soccer Dome.
Ice rink operator Planet Ice has signed a major pre-let to run the new arena — their 15th UK venue and potentially their biggest. The scheme includes a professional-standard ice pad, flexible event space for concerts and VR shows.
The facility forms part of Peel Waters’ long-term TraffordCity masterplan. The wider site has already delivered 17,500 jobs and aims to nearly double that over the next 20 years through sports-led regeneration.
James Whittaker, managing director at Peel Waters, said: “Through this new arena, we will now be able to offer a wide range of ice-leisure activities for communities to enjoy taking part in or spectating, which in turn will also grow our visitor economy.”
The project would give Trafford two full-sized ice rinks, bringing it in line with cities like Nottingham and Sheffield.
If approved, construction is expected to take 12 to 15 months.
