McAlpine cleans up with mega spa job in latest contracts league
Sir Robert McAlpine bathed in success last month with top ranking in the contracts league after finally signing off a £450m contract to build the Therme Manchester Spa project in TraffordCity.
Billed as the UK’s first urban wellbeing resort and the largest thermal pool complex in Europe, the scheme will boast more than 25 waterslides, the country’s biggest sauna area, multiple steam rooms and botanical gardens.
The project adds to a swelling orderbook of largely major project wins for the business this year.
In what proved to be another strong month of orders for big contractors McLaren Construction ranked second with a clutch of wins, including a large student scheme at Upper Brooke Street in Manchester.
A brace of big warehouse jobs in the Midlands helped Winvic secure third place in the month’s rankings. These included phase 3 and 4 work for Tritax at its Symmetry Park near Kettering and a planned industrial park for Panatonni at Pickards way, near the M6 in Coventry.
According to data compiled by Barbour ABI, the top 50 contractors notched up £3.9bn in new orders last month. While this was down on last month’s high of £8.3bn, following Strabag’s award of a £3bn longterm deal for the Haweswater aqueduct upgrade in the North West, it represented a strong pipeline of work secured.
