Maidstone seeks builder for £50m flats project

Maidstone Borough Council has kicked off the hunt for a contractor to deliver a £50m flats project on the former Springfield Library site in the Kent town.

The two-block scheme will see 103 new flats built under a two-stage design and build procurement process.

The development includes a 10-storey tower and is classed as a Higher Risk Building under the Building Safety Act 2022. That means the winning bidder will need to demonstrate competency in working under the new safety regime.

Approved plans feature 43% one-beds, 47% two-beds and 11% three-beds. A total of 68 basement parking spaces and extensive public realm works are included.

Consultancy Airey Miller is acting as employer’s agent, overseeing both design and construction phases, with the scheme due to start in December 2025 and complete by the end of 2027.

Interested firms must express interest by 25 August via the Kent Business Portal. The contract award is expected to be made in December.
