Leeds United will start work on a major expansion of Elland Road this summer after securing planning approval.

Councillors at Leeds City Council gave green light yesterday evening to plans to raise capacity to up to 53,000, cementing its position as one of the largest club stadiums in the country.

The scheme will see West and North stands partially demolished and rebuilt alongside targeted alterations to the South Stand, transforming the ground into a UEFA Category 4 stadium capable of hosting major international tournaments and showcase events.

Enabling works are set to begin immediately, with major construction scheduled to follow the end of the current season.

Crucially, Elland Road will remain fully operational throughout the works, allowing Leeds United to continue playing home matches at their historic home.

The club said the project will deliver wide-ranging improvements to fan comfort, sightlines and matchday amenities, both inside and around the stadium, while preserving the atmosphere and acoustics that Elland Road is famous for.

Specialist sports architect KSS has designed the project, alongside structural engineer Buro Happold.

Project management will be led by RISE, with the Lowy Family Group acting as development partner for the wider regeneration of the area.

The stadium upgrade is also being positioned as a catalyst for wider regeneration in the Elland Road area.
