Laing O’Rourke gets go-ahead for Halifax hospital upgrade
Laing O’Rourke’s plans for a major new clinical building at Calderdale Royal Hospital have been approved by councillors, clearing the way for construction to start in summer 2026.
The landmark project will include separate emergency departments for adults and children, along with eight new wards, and is expected to complete in 2029.
It forms a major part of a planned £200m investment in upgrading hospital facilities in Halifax.
Reserved matters approval from Calderdale Council means the design, appearance, layout and landscaping have all been signed off, confirming a major step in the hospital’s long-term redevelopment.
The new block has been designed to reflect Halifax’s architectural heritage while linking seamlessly with the existing estate. Sustainability is central to the design, which targets a BREEAM Excellent rating through high energy efficiency, waste reduction, and biodiversity measures.
Laing O’Rourke was appointed in 2024 to lead the design and planning work. Project leader Christopher Northwood said the firm would use modern methods of construction to minimise carbon.
Preparatory works, including power and water service upgrades, will begin in the coming months before full construction starts next summer.
The new building forms part of the Trust’s long-term “Foundations for our Future” programme to modernise hospital and community healthcare services across Calderdale and Huddersfield.
