Graham set for £284m London Met Uni revamp

Contractor Graham is set to be confirmed as strategic delivery partner on London Metropolitan University’s £284m estate overhaul after emerging as the sole bidder on the long-running procurement.

The contractor will take on a wide-ranging role spanning capital works delivery and total facilities management across the university’s London campuses under a deal running to 2031, with an option to extend to 2036.

Under the deal, Graham will lead new build and refurbishment schemes, provide buildability and lifecycle advice at design stage and take responsibility for ongoing FM services once assets are handed over.

The contractor will also be tasked with driving decarbonisation across the estate, alongside delivering social value commitments and improving the condition and functionality of existing buildings.

The university’s estates strategy, launched in 2022, set out plans for major investment to 2032 across its Holloway, Aldgate and Shoreditch sites, targeting ageing assets and operational inefficiencies.

The masterplan for the main Holloway Road campus in Islington was drawn up by Design Engine Architects, consulting engineer Buro Happold and cost consultant Gardiner & Theobald.

The campus plan will involve demolishing buildings to create a major courtyard space behind the award-winning Daniel Liebeskind student building on Holloway Road and a complete overhaul of the 12-storey tower next to it.

Work at the Aldgate Campus and Accelerator building will focus more on building refurbishment and upgrades.

The deal is expected to be formally signed later this month.
