Design unveiled for Commonwealth Games stadium
Designs for the redevelopment of Alexander Stadium in Birmingham to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games have been published, as public consultation begins.
The construction plan is to build a new main west stand and construct new north and south bowl seating areas
The redeveloped stadium at Walsall Road in Perry Park will increase its permanent seating capacity from 12,700 to 18,000 allowing up to 40,000 during the Games through additional temporary seating.
The design and build contract, presently out to bid, is expected to be worth around £63m and will involve revamping Birmingham’s 40-year-old Alexander Stadium.
Consultant Arup has been working up the new stadium design, with Mace onboard as project manager for the council.
The construction plan is to build a new main west stand and construct new north and south bowl seating areas with the remaining 5,000-capacity back straight stand built in 2012 retained.
Key features
- A new western stand replacing the Main, Knowles and Nelson stands
- New tiered seating to the north and south
- A new 400m 6-lane warm up track and re-laying of a new IAAF Category 1 track (400m 9-lane competition standard track)
- Improved public realm and parking provision, with additional landscaping and signage
- Installation of new stadium lighting and practice throwing field
- A new access road from A453 Aldridge Road (to be used for event/maintenance use only)
Demolition of the current west stand within the stadium is subject to a separate application, which will be submitted to Birmingham City Council this summer.
