Builder wanted for £60m London leisure and flats job

East London’s Tower Hamlets Council is opening early market discussions with contractors ahead of a £60m redevelopment of the St George’s Leisure Centre in Shadwell.

The £60m job will involve demolition of the existing building and construction of a modern leisure centre along with an eight-storey block of flats delivering 29 homes.

Both the leisure facilities and residential accommodation will be owned and managed by the council.

The council is looking to appoint a single principal contractor and expects to invite up to 10 firms for one-hour one-to-one sessions with council staff on 6 or 7 May to provide feedback on the scheme.

A full open invitation to tender will be published around 20 May with the main contract expected to run for three years from December 2025 to November 2028.
