Balfour Beatty wins Trent arched bridge job
Balfour Beatty has clinched the £12.6m delivery contract to build a new bridge over the River Trent in Nottingham.
The 85m-long pedestrian and cycle bridge will be the first bridge built in the city since the 1950s.
It will link the north side of the river where the new Trent Basin community of 350 homes continues to take shape, and the south side of the river with sports facilities and riverside walks.
The bridge will be one of the longest single-spanning network arch bridges for pedestrians in the UK
The contract signing triggers the start of site preparation with the demolition of a warehouse previously used by Flo Skate Park.
Construction timeline
- February/March: Site clearance, demolishing a warehouse formerly used by Flo skate park
- March: Balfour Beatty will bring equipment, materials and cabins to site
- April onwards: Piling starts
- Summer – autumn: local firm Briton Fabricators starts fabricating bridge on site using large, prefabricated sections
- November: Completed bridge and basin bridge lifted into place
- Winter 25/26: Landscaping completed including paving, planting and lighting
- Spring 2026: The new bridge opens
Errol Wisby, portfolio director at Balfour Beatty, said: “We now look forward to works commencing in earnest and seeing the positive impact this project will have on Nottingham and its residents both now and in the future.”
